Who it suits

People usually ask about fillers for:

  • Lips that have lost volume or definition
  • Flattening of the cheeks
  • Lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth

Who it is not suitable for

  • Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Anyone under 18
  • Anyone with a skin infection or inflammation in the area to be treated
  • Anyone with a history of severe allergic reactions
  • If you have an autoimmune condition, take blood-thinning medicine, or have reacted to a filler before, please tell us at your consultation

We go through your medical history at your consultation and will tell you if another treatment, or no treatment, is the better choice.

How fillers work

Dermal fillers are gels made from hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the skin. They are placed beneath the skin to add volume or definition in a specific area.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary. The body breaks them down gradually.

Your appointment

Consultation

We look at your skin, go through your medical history and explain the likely result, the risks and the alternatives. You can take time to decide.

Treatment

Numbing cream is applied, and most fillers also contain a local anaesthetic. The filler is placed with a fine needle or cannula.

Afterwards

Expect some swelling. We explain how to look after the area and arrange a review if one is needed.

Who treats you

Injectable treatments at Skin Life are carried out only by appropriately trained and insured practitioners, after a face-to-face consultation.

Side effects and risks

Common and usually short-lived: swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness and small lumps that settle.

Rare but serious: infection, an allergic reaction, or a blocked blood vessel, which can damage the skin and, very rarely, affect sight. This needs urgent treatment. Your practitioner explains the warning signs before you agree to treatment.

Looking after the area

  • Avoid make-up for 12 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and sunbeds for 48 hours.
  • Do not massage or press on the area unless we advise it.
  • Contact the clinic straight away if you have increasing pain, pale or mottled skin, or any change in your sight.

Questions

Do fillers hurt?

Numbing cream is applied first, and most fillers contain a local anaesthetic. The lips are usually the most sensitive area.

How long do fillers last?

They are temporary. How long they last depends on the product, the area and how your body breaks it down. We give you a realistic estimate at your consultation.

Will it look natural?

We agree the result you want before any treatment and can build it up gradually. We will tell you if we think a treatment would not suit you.

Do I have to be 18?

Yes. It is against the law in England to give dermal fillers to anyone under 18 for cosmetic reasons.
