Who it suits
People usually book it for:
- Muscles that feel tight, stiff or sore
- Recovery between training sessions or events
- Tension from long hours at a desk or on your feet
- A firm massage, rather than a light relaxing one
Who it is not suitable for
- Anyone under 18
- Anyone with a blood clot, or a history of deep vein thrombosis
- A fever, an infection, or broken skin or a rash in the area to be treated
- A recent injury, fracture or operation in the area: please see your GP or physiotherapist first
- If you are pregnant, please ask us before booking
- If you take blood-thinning medicine or bruise easily, please tell us before your appointment
We go through your medical history at your consultation and will tell you if another treatment, or no treatment, is the better choice.
Which massage to choose
Deep tissue massage: slow, firm pressure that works into the deeper layers of muscle, concentrating on the areas that feel tight.
Sports massage: a firm massage focused on the muscles you use most in your sport or training, before or after an event or as part of your routine.
Both are 60 minutes. At the start, Marcela asks where you feel tight and what you would like from the session, and she adjusts the pressure throughout.
Your appointment
Before
We ask about your health, any injuries and your activity, to make sure the massage is suitable.
Treatment
You lie on the treatment couch, covered with towels except for the area being worked on.
Afterwards
Muscles can feel tender for a day or two, as they can after exercise.
Who treats you
Massage at Skin Life is carried out by Marcela, a remedial and sports massage therapist.
Side effects and risks
Common and short-lived: tenderness or aching in the treated muscles for a day or two.
Less common: bruising, particularly if you bruise easily or take blood-thinning medicine. Tell Marcela straight away if the pressure feels too strong or anything is painful.
Afterwards
- Drink plenty of water.
- Take it easy with hard exercise for the rest of the day if your muscles feel tender.
Questions
What is the difference between deep tissue and sports massage?
Both are firm. Deep tissue massage works slowly into areas of tension anywhere in the body, while sports massage focuses on the muscles you use in your sport or training. If you are not sure, book either and tell Marcela what you need.
Does it hurt?
It is firm, and tight areas can feel tender while they are worked on. Tell Marcela if you would like the pressure lighter or firmer.
Can massage treat an injury?
Massage is not a substitute for medical treatment. If you have a new or severe injury, or one that is not getting better, see your GP or a physiotherapist first.
How often can I have it?
As often as you like, once any tenderness from the last session has settled. Some people come every few weeks.
