Who it suits
Laser treatment is usually chosen for small veins that are visible just under the skin.
- Fine red or purple thread veins on the face
- Thread veins on the legs
Who it is not suitable for
- Recently tanned or sunburnt skin, including fake tan
- Larger, raised varicose veins, which need to be assessed by a doctor
- Anyone who is pregnant
- Anyone under 18
- If you take blood-thinning medicine, or medicines that make skin sensitive to light, please tell us first
We go through your medical history at your consultation and will tell you if another treatment, or no treatment, is the better choice.
How it works
The laser’s light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the blood inside the vein. This heats the vein and closes it, and the body clears it away over the following weeks.
A cooling spray protects the surface of the skin with each pulse.
Your appointment
Consultation and patch test
We look at the veins, check that laser is suitable and test a small area.
Treatment
You wear eye protection. The laser is pulsed along each vein; each pulse feels like a quick, hot snap.
Afterwards
The area can be red, slightly swollen or bruised for a few days. Leg veins can take several weeks to fade.
Who treats you
Laser treatments at Skin Life are carried out by trained laser practitioners, after a consultation and patch test.
Side effects and risks
Common and short-lived: redness, swelling and bruising. Treated veins can look darker before they fade.
Less common: blistering, crusting, or lighter or darker patches of skin. These are more likely on tanned skin.
Looking after your skin
- Avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks before and after treatment, and use SPF 30 or higher.
- Avoid hot baths, saunas and strenuous exercise for 48 hours.
- For leg veins, we may advise support stockings for a few days.
Questions
Does it hurt?
Each pulse feels like a quick, hot snap. A cooling spray makes it more comfortable.
How many sessions will I need?
Small facial veins sometimes clear in one or two sessions. Leg veins often need more.
Will the veins come back?
Treated veins do not usually return, but new ones can appear over time.
Is it the same as treatment for varicose veins?
No. Laser is for small surface veins. Larger, raised varicose veins need to be assessed by a doctor.
