Who it suits
The plasma pen is usually chosen for small areas of loose or crepey skin.
- Loose skin on the upper eyelids
- Fine lines around the eyes or mouth
Who it is not suitable for
- Darker skin tones, which have a higher risk of changes in skin colour
- Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding
- Anyone under 18
- Anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device
- Anyone who tends to form keloid scars, or has a skin infection in the area
- If you have had eye surgery or have an eye condition, please tell us at your consultation
We go through your medical history at your consultation and will tell you if another treatment, or no treatment, is the better choice.
How it works
The tip of the plasma pen never touches the skin. A tiny electrical arc passes from the tip to the surface, leaving a pinpoint mark.
A pattern of these marks is made across the area. The skin between them is left untouched, and the marks form small crusts that fall away as the skin heals.
Your appointment
Consultation
We look at your skin, go through your medical history and explain the likely result, the risks and the alternatives. You can take time to decide.
Treatment
Numbing cream is applied for 30 to 45 minutes. The marks are then made across the area in a grid.
Afterwards
Swelling is common for a few days, especially around the eyes. Small brown crusts form and fall away after about a week.
Who treats you
Plasma pen treatments are carried out by trained practitioners, after a consultation.
Side effects and risks
Expected: swelling, redness and small crusts, which usually clear within one to two weeks.
Less common: infection, scarring, or lighter or darker patches of skin. These are more likely if the crusts are picked or the area is exposed to the sun.
Looking after your skin
- Do not pick or scratch the crusts. Let them fall away.
- Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid make-up on it until the crusts have gone.
- Avoid sun exposure and use a high-factor sunscreen for at least 12 weeks.
Questions
Does it hurt?
Numbing cream is applied first. Most people feel heat and a prickling sensation.
How long is the recovery?
Plan for about a week. Swelling is at its worst in the first two or three days, and the crusts fall away after about a week.
Is it suitable for my skin tone?
It is not usually suitable for darker skin tones, because of the risk of changes in skin colour. We assess this at your consultation.
How many treatments will I need?
Often one. We review the result once the skin has healed.
