How it works

Microdermabrasion uses a handpiece to buff away the outermost layer of dead skin cells, while light suction lifts them off.

A mild glycolic acid solution is then applied for a few minutes and removed. Glycolic acid loosens the bonds between dead cells on the surface of the skin.

Your appointment

Skin check

We look at your skin and ask about your skincare and any medicines, to make sure the treatment is suitable.

Treatment

The skin is cleansed, then treated with the microdermabrasion handpiece. The glycolic solution is applied and removed; you may feel tingling.

Afterwards

Moisturiser and sunscreen are applied. Your skin can look slightly pink for a few hours.

Side effects and risks

Common and short-lived: redness, tightness and mild sensitivity.

Less common: irritation, dryness or flaking for a few days, and skin that burns more easily in the sun.

Looking after your skin

  • Use SPF 30 or higher every day and avoid strong sun for a week.
  • Leave retinol and exfoliating acids out of your routine for a few days.
  • Avoid make-up for the rest of the day if you can.

Questions

Does it hurt?

No. Most people feel light scratching and suction, then some tingling while the glycolic solution is on.

How often can I have it?

Every three to four weeks is common. We will advise for your skin.

Will my skin peel?

This is a light peel, so visible peeling is uncommon. Some people notice slight dryness or flaking for a day or two.

Can I have it before an event?

Yes. Allow a couple of days in case your skin is a little pink or dry afterwards.
