How skin tightening treatments work

Skin gets its firmness from collagen and its spring from elastin. From our mid-twenties we make a little less of both each year, and sun exposure speeds the loss. Over time the skin becomes thinner and less firm.

Skin tightening treatments do not replace what has been lost. They aim to prompt the skin to repair itself.

How the treatments work

Most use heat. When the deeper layer of the skin is warmed in a controlled way, the body responds as it would to a minor injury, and that repair response includes laying down new collagen over the following weeks.

Microneedling works on the same principle without heat: very fine needles make tiny channels in the skin, and the skin repairs them.

The options at Skin Life

  • Exilis warms the skin with radiofrequency and ultrasound. There are no needles.
  • Vivace combines microneedling with radiofrequency, delivering the heat through the needles.
  • T-Shape 2 combines radiofrequency with a vacuum massage.

Which one suits you depends on the area, your skin and how much recovery time you can allow. We advise at a consultation.

What is a session like?

Exilis and T-Shape 2 feel like a warm massage, and the skin may look pink for an hour or two. Vivace uses numbing cream first, and the skin usually looks red for a day or two afterwards.

When will I see a difference?

Not straight away. Collagen builds slowly, so changes develop over weeks and can continue for a few months after a course. Results vary from person to person, they are not permanent, and maintenance sessions are usually needed.

Helping your results last

  • Wear sunscreen every day. Sun is the main cause of collagen loss.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Keep your weight steady.
  • Follow the aftercare you are given.
