Who it suits
Sugaring suits most skin and hair types. For the best result:
- Let the hair grow to about the length of a grain of rice
- Leave at least two weeks after shaving
- Come with clean, dry skin, with no lotion or oil on the area
Who it is not suitable for
- Skin that is sunburnt, broken, or has a rash or infection
- Anyone under 18
- If you use prescription skincare such as tretinoin, or have taken isotretinoin in the last six months, please tell us first, because the skin can lift
- If you have diabetes or take blood-thinning medicine, please tell us before your appointment
We go through your medical history at your consultation and will tell you if another treatment, or no treatment, is the better choice.
Sugaring or waxing?
Sugaring uses a soft paste made from sugar. It is spread onto the skin against the direction of hair growth, then flicked off in the direction the hair grows.
Wax is put on the other way round: with the direction of growth, and taken off against it. Both remove hair from the root, and many people simply have a preference.
Your appointment
Before
Let the hair grow to about the length of a grain of rice, and leave at least two weeks after shaving. Come with clean, dry skin, with no lotion or oil on the area.
Treatment
The skin is cleansed, then the paste is spread on and flicked off, a small area at a time.
Afterwards
The skin can be red and sensitive for a few hours.

Side effects and risks
Common and short-lived: redness, tenderness and small bumps.
Less common: ingrown hairs, bruising, or a small area of skin lifting. Tell us about your skincare and medicines so we can reduce these risks.
Looking after your skin
- Avoid hot baths, saunas, swimming and exercise for 24 hours.
- Avoid sun exposure and sunbeds for 48 hours.
- Wear loose clothing over the area for the rest of the day.
- Exfoliate gently after a few days to help prevent ingrown hairs.

How long should the hair be?
About the length of a grain of rice. That is usually two to three weeks after shaving.
Does sugaring hurt?
It stings briefly as the paste is flicked off. It usually becomes easier with regular appointments.

Usually three to six weeks, depending on your hair growth.

Can I have laser hair removal instead?
Yes. Laser gives long-term hair reduction and suits many people. You need to stop sugaring before starting a laser course.
